Safety Equalizers

Safety Equalizers

Okay, so you may feel somewhat "unsafe" in your RV, and maybe you've had no bad experiences, or perhaps one or two that were shaky.

So, what do you do for self protection (aka safety equalizers) while inside your RV?

1. Firearms: According to all the information I can read, is this: If your home state (that is the state where you are registered - as in your driver's license, and RV license tag), permits firearm carrying in an automobile, then it extends also to RV. But, check with local law enforcement to determine precisely what is the acceptable standard (i.e. unloaded? Or, loaded, but "not readily accessible? among others).
(a) traveling interstate and intrastate with a firearm - becomes Federal. You must read up on federal firearm laws.
(b) don't believe that your RV is your "HOME" and you are entitled to firearm safety protection as if you owned a permanent, in place, dwelling. Laws from state to state vary, as does federal law. Just remember, that holding a gun at a possible intruder puts you in the position of possibly "having to use it," and the question is, are you prepared for that consequence?

2. a "TIRE THUMPER" (almost looks like a billy-club)....but passes easily for a tire thumper. A baseball bat? Hmmmm. afterall it is an item that is not illegal. Either way, you have to "swing" it. So does that give you some sense of protection? In swinging it, are you giving ground to a second or two, which may allow an intruder to disarm you?

3. A spray bottle (plastic) filled full of straight chlorine (like liquid swimming pool chlorine). Now, that's a real equalizer. No swinging, just point and spray. It has devestating consequences if sprayed in some intruder's face - burns the skin, the eyes,,,etc. And, its not illegal. Some Rvers we know, keep a bottle handy near the entry door, and a spare inside the sleeping area.

4. Stun gun? Again, check state laws regarding the transportation as well as the actually having one. You might be surprised - it is banned in many places.

5. Pepper spray. Possibility. But cannister has a shelf life.

6. Fire extinguisher. Hmmmm...but would that repel an intruder if you sprayed it? Maybe momentairly. But what if there were two?

7. A nice leather belt with a Texas sized brass buckle? Only if you're strong enough to use it.

8. I like the little 4x6 sticker, that some place close to the exterior door, which has a photo of a snarly looking Rottweiler, and a statement: "I can make it to this door in 2 seconds flat..."
(a) do you have an audio tape of a loud barking dog, that you can instantly turn on?

These, just a few that come to mind, perhaps others care to input more info.

In any event, if you feel unsafe but still want to RV and stay in areas where there is possibility of hostility - you need some sort of a "backup" plan in that eventuality.

And "puleeze" let's not even talk about the kitchen butcher knife.
