We followed the discussion about overnight stays at Wal-Mart quite a while. Our experience regarding overnight stays is positive.
Our rule is to ask someone at the store or look for other RVs. Then we just use it for sleeping, never for camping.
We found that in more touristic areas, it is almost forbidden to spend a night at Wal-Mart.
On our recent trip in September, we found a comprehensive Wal-Mart directory for all marts. It is the RandMcNally Street Atlas. We bought the latest version at one Wal-Mart for just $6 (regular $12). This is a special Wal-Mart edition. Of course it does not tell you if overnight stays are allowed or not, but it was a great help to localize shops.
We used to follow our rule: Not a tourist area. Stay overnight. Tourist area. No overnight stay. :)
